Digital creation in Bordeaux is a hit!

The creative and cultural ecosystem of the Bordeaux Metropole region continues to grow, thanks in particular to the leverage of digital technology. The Bordeaux Metropole region supports the development of this growing economic sector, which generates innovation, creativity, and employment. This potential has become even more obvious in the wake of the public health crisis, despite real disparities between sectors: the creative economy has been confirmed fields of opportunities for projects and collaborations, business and careers, innovation and transition. What better marker than creativity can highlight the uniqueness of a territory and its talents?

France has two-thirds of its animation programmes exported, with 75M€ sold internationally. It accounts for more than a third of European production and ranks among the world’s top four, along with the United States, Japan and Canada. It is the world’s second largest video game producer after the United States.

The Nouvelle Aquitaine Region and the Bordeaux Metropole represent leading territorial players, with a booming creative and digital ecosystem (special effects, virtual reality, motion design, post-production, video games, etc.). Bordeaux and Angoulême thus form the second largest centre for animated image production in France

In terms of video games, their ecosystems merged in 2021, giving birth to SO-Games. This regional player brings together all the professionals in the sector and carries out projects, particularly in the fields of excellence, employment and ecoresponsibility.

The cultural and creative industries, through their potential for job creation and outreach, are a major challenge for the Bordeaux region and its economy.

That’s why, from 8 to 10 March 2022, Bordeaux is proud to support, for the 6th time, a major event for the cultural and creative industries: the European Cartoon Movie forum (900 animation film professionals from 38 countries), in partnership with the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the City of Bordeaux and the Image Magelis cluster in Angoulême. The opportunity to connect local actors of the creative and digital economy and animated image European professionals, and to highlight the innovation capacities of the territory.

This professional forum is an essential meeting place for creative people in the world of animation and for investors, buyers, distributors, media players, etc. to develop projects and set up co-productions.

With four competitive clusters, one Bordeaux- Euratlantic National Interest Operation and three Metropolitan Interest Operations (Bordeaux Inno Campus, Bordeaux Aéroparc and Arc Rive droite), the Bordeaux metropolis enjoys economic dynamics placing it among the top three French and digital creation. Bordeaux Métropole is thus activating new levers for the development of this booming ecosystem that mixes fields and approaches such as art, creativity and technological innovation.

Some key figures on the metropolitan territory:

  • 3,600 companies in Gironde belong to the creative economy sector,
  • 2nd city in France, after Paris, for the hosting of comic book professionals,
  • 3rd city in France behind Paris and Lyon for video game creation,
  • 3rd region for shooting feature films and TV dramas.
