1991 - Cartoon Forum ST-MALO

1991 - Cartoon Forum ST-MALO

For our second meeting, and with 69 projects to be pitched, we decided to bring everyone together fi rst thing in the morning before the pitching sessions in order to show the projects for that day. But how could this best be done? We decided to employ a pro- fessional actor, who would act out and summarise each of the projects that would be presented that day.

The Palais du Grand Large provided a spectacular view over the sea, and was ideal for the practical needs of the Forum. We had 9 more projects than in the previous year and 250 participants.

We had new participants including Odec Kid Cartoons, Anima Studio, Milli- mages, TFC Trickompany, A for Animation and Artoon. There were a number of feature fi lm projects alongside the television series: Enzo d´Alò´s fi rst fi lm, «The Blue Arrow», «The Little Punk» 1991 - Cartoon Forum ST-MALOby Michael Schaack, and Thilo and Maya Rothkirch´s fi rst fi lm, «Tobias Totz».

And of course some of the most memorable moments at the Forum were the lunches. Mountains of prawns, shellfi sh and oysters, fi sh in the most wonderful sauces. A real gourmet´s delight – and a frequent topic of conversation between presentations.

At the end of the first Forum, Daniel Goudineau, then Head of Audiovisual sec- tor at the CNC said: «Next year, let´s hold it in France. I suggest Saint-Malo. It´s my home town, and I will introduce you to the local authorities.» Indeed, we had a very pleasant and easy working relationship with everyone there.

We contacted Moebius for the poster. He said: «Saint-Malo makes me think of the sound of seagulls, the sky and the sea. I will draw a seagull on a blue background».

Saint-Malo was the first ‘Celtic’ Forum. Still by the sea, but the air was more bracing. After exotic and enchanting islands, we were surrounded by the harsher climate of the Channel. No question of swimming in the sea!

But what a marvellous sight, when we came to the morning’s project presentations, in the huge room with its panoramic views, and windows framed by huge waves that reached up from below. The Forum was born in the gentle climate of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Now, it was time to grow in strength in the mists of Brittany.

Corinne and Marc had created a wonderful decor which allowed us to move from one project to another, discovering new and exciting possibilities.

In those days, France 5 did not exist. Raymonde Lanzi and I represented the CNC and attended all the French presentations, guaranteeing the support of COSIP funds. To our great surprise those from outside France knew that COSIP and CNC – strange acronyms – rhymed with money!

It was still a small group with only a fortunate chosen few, and so we were able to give all our time. However, the number of good projects was getting larger. We felt that a family was coming into being, and a methodology was being created. A European media industry had been launched, and Cartoon was its spearhead.
